Brand Name

I've been planning on participating in pitch wars so I've been reading through mentor's blogs trying to get to know them. I was surprised by one thing I noticed repeatedly. Not just one or two blogs, but many.

They didn't have their name on the blog.

Because I was going through so many I often had multiple tabs open and I didn't always know who's blog I was reading. There were great blogs, fun blogs, rich with voice and advice and when I looked to see who it was. There was no name. Anywhere.

Authors. YOUR NAME IS YOUR BRAND.

It should be on your page. Several times. You want who you are to be so visible there is no mistake, no question. How can I know who to apply for for mentorship? How can I know what name to look up when I'm at the bookstore or perusing Amazon? How can I become your reader if I don't know who you are?

I don't think I can stress the importance of this enough. Make yourself visible. Make it easy for people to get to know you. Because there are a lot of other authors on the internet and if I can't figure out who you are, I'll just flip to the next tab and you will be forgotten.

  1. Great advise. Most of us don't enjoy the self-promotion side of writing, but taking one's NAME out of the equation is ridiculous. It's a form of self-destruction.

    1. Agreed. I was shocked at how many of them just had a pithy quote or something else, rather than a name.

  2. Agreed! The first thing a person wants to knowing when coming to a blog is who's writing it!

    1. I'm trying to build a website (not going well) and trying to make sure mine is everywhere. Grr, we'll see if I can even get it publishable.

  4. I've noticed that too. It's such a simple thing, but so important!

  5. Good point, you got to be visible and easy to find or people will move on.

  6. I am SHOCKED.... with so many authors plugging themselves every second, these blogger/writers don't have their names visible? That is just STUPID....I hope they find you, Sara, and read this post!

  8. I don't currently have my name on my blog title, and that's partially because someone else with the same name as me already has a blog title with our name. Although my first name is everywhere on my blog, I haven't put down my last name yet because I haven't decided yet that, when I'm published, whether to use my real name or a pen name. So to keep things simple, I'm leaving that part blank for now.

I agree though that people should have their name (even if it's just their first name) on their blog.

    1. But you have some sort of identifier on there. Some way for people to address you or know who you are. That's what's important.
