Never Say Never

I've never been a big fan of books written in present tense. Sometimes I would stop reading them for no reason other than they were written in present tense. Now, I find myself using it on a short story. I didn't even realize until the first draft was done. I'm not sure how I feel about it. But I do know that whatever happens will be an adventure.

Have you ever found yourself doing something in your writing you never thought you would do?

  1. I've never tried writing it, but I don't mind reading it. It's definitely good to try something new! Interesting what you say about it being an adventure - maybe it naturally leads to writing more in the moment?

    1. It wasn't a conscious choice to try it. That's just how the story came out. So, yea, surprise adventure.

  2. Yes, I never though I'd have a job as a nonfiction writer. Glad you're looking at it as an adventure.

  3. I am fine with present tense fiction. For me, it's the story that matters.

    1. That's the only reason I'm doing it in present tense. That's how the story came out.

  4. I've gotten used to present tense, though I;m not a fan. I suppose I'm old school. I still write notes in cursive too.

    1. I had to stop writing cursive when I took Russian in college. I had to use cursive in my classes so whenever I wrote cursive I threw in the Cyrillic alphabet. You should have seen the first time I tried to sign my married name.

  5. I used to be the same about present tense, but a couple stories won me over. When I was younger, I didn't even like first person, but now I write in it all the time.

  6. Cutting to the Chase was originally in third. Switching it to present tense upped the ante and added depth to MC. I still write my historicals in third, but YA for me is automatically first person.

    1. I find myself doing my YA in first, also. I know that's popular right now. Wonder if it will ever go out?

  7. I know what you mean about the story just coming out that way. I wrote an essay in second person once and when the editor of the anthology it was in commented, she said it was a brilliant decision. I didn't really feel like I deserved that praise because it wasn't something I consciously decided to do. It just came to me that way.

    1. Still, you wrote it that way, and you didn't change it. Take credit for it. You'll get rejected over things you have no control over. Might as well take the good with the bad.

  8. It's not my favorite tense, but I read the story not matter which tense it used.

  9. I always thought I wouldn't like present tense stories. But recently I liked a book in resent tense. It matters how its done.

    1. It does matter. And never having done it before I'm not sure I'm doing it right. Still, it's good practice.

  10. YES! One of the characters in my WIP keeps dropping the F-bomb. I may rein him in during edits, but he sure does have a potty mouth. It fits his character, though, but I guess I'll have to leave some of it in...

  11. So far I've only tried present tense in SoC... Actually, that sounds like a good idea for exercises on the Forum -- trying a new technique each month!
