Everything but the kitchen sink....

Hey, all. I hope your holidays and new year were spectacular.  We started out on a bit of a wrong foot when the internet and furnace stopped working on the same day last week. The internet was out for a couple days and while I know the furnace is more important, I think I missed the internet more.

Our outages did make it a little hard to get back into the swing of things and I’m still trying to adjust back to 'normal' life.

Are any of you proficient on GoodReads?  I'm wondering if there is a way to make a bookshelf private. I want to use the bookshelves to make a list of the books I own, but don't necessarily want to make that viewable by the public.  Anyone know?

If, like me, your still catching up, here are some links you might have missed.

Here there is a post and an interview with someone who did an experiment regarding Genre and Platform.  It was pretty interesting and I'd love to know what you think. Are some genres more popular than others? How important are platforms?

Here we have 10 of the greatest essays on writing.  Honestly, as I'm still catching up, I haven't finished all of them so I can't say whether or not I agree with their being the best, but I plan to find out.

  1. I rarely go to GoodReads but should become more active there.

I will have to come back to your post as I'm interested in reading about genre and platform but have little time right now.

    Happy New Year.

  2. Sorry you didn't have heat and the Internet. I'd probably be more upset about the Internet too. Though maybe not if I was cold.

I use Goodreads, but am not sure how you make it private. I suppose if you don't have friends there, no one would see your list. I don't think many people go to the lists anyway.

  3. I've been on holiday so I am getting back into the swing of things.
I did have the internet, but chose not to use it. I have a Goodreads account but never use it. Happy New Year!

    1. Well, you're no help. :)

We don't have TV, just internet streaming, so we missed that.

  4. You missed the internet more than the furnace - that made me giggle. Glad you are both warm and connected again!

    1. I probably would have missed the furnace more if we didn't have a different furnace for the other floor of the house. (I don't know why they do it like that here but every house has two furnaces) So as long as we stayed on the warm floor we were fine. We just had to make quick trips to the kitchen for more food. :)

  5. You always have the best links, Sara. Thanks! And I'm not sure about Goodreads. I don't know if you can make a list private. Seems like nothing online is anymore. :)

  6. Happy New Year, Sara. I'm on Goodreads and I know what you mean about wanting to make your bookshelf private. I have had the same concern as you- if you figure it out, please post about it here!

    1. Will do. I think I'm going to have to ask a 'librarian' there at goodreads.

  7. Right now, in MN, my furnace is much more valuable than the internet. If need be, I could get by on my phone. :-)

  8. I don't know about the private bookshelf thing. I think the purpose of Goodreads is to share with others what books you've read.
Going to check on the link and it's so cold here in PA, the furnace is a matter of survival.

  9. Yikes! I'm sorry you lost heat and internet, but I'm glad both are working properly now. It's way too cold to be without your furnace!

I'm not sure if you can make a bookshelf private, but I wouldn't be surprised if there is a way. Off to check out the essays now!

    1. It is cold, hope you're surviving there. Don't suppose you've gotten off work? Schools are closed here today.

  10. It seems like life is a catching-up game. Doesn't it? I look forward to checking out those links. Thank you.

    Be well.

  11. Catching up is hard to do! I'm back to work, but only because the WFWA's Write-A-Thin started on Jan. 1...and I'm a co-program coordinator. LOL!

I'm on Goodreads, but I've not used it much. Now I need to get an author page going. Note to self--Put that on the to-do list!

  12. Hey, Sara. Take it easy. Sometimes when things are just nuts, the best thing to do is to just be gentle with yourself. :)

  13. I'm fairly active on Goodreads but I don't know about making bookshelves private. One time when I had a question about something I "asked a librarian" and got a very helpful answer. That might be one way to find out if you can do what you want to do.

If the heater were to go out in our house, we'll be turning on the gas stove. :)

  14. Both? Yikes! I think I would probably miss the internet too. At least I can make myself warm. I cannot turn into the internet O_O

I've saved the essay page! Definitely will take a look as soon as chapter one of my current textbook has been read!

  15. Is it bad that I also think I might be a little more upset about the internet, too? At least with the furnace out you can still put on gloves and a hat and be warm. There's no sticking antennas to your computer for internet access.

Ooh, definitely checking out the links! I use Goodreads, but I'm bad at remembering to actually get on there. I constantly forget to update when I'm reading a book, when I've completed one, and I've listed nowhere near the amount of books I've actually read. One day I'll get there.

  16. Oh, if you find a way to do that in Goodreads, drop me a note please. I quit offering reviews because of the angst it was causing or could potentially cause authors. The whole thing started getting a bit ridiculous. Like you, I just liked it to track my books! Back to my hand-written format I think. Happy New Year to you-- hope it has all kinds of good and prolific adventures for you.

  17. Hi, Sara.... Happy New Year!

Sorry to hear about the internet and furnace... major bummer. I was without internet service for two weeks during the a-z challenge. Thought I'd go mad. I had to run to McDonalds to post... LOL.... Not fun. I feel your pain. lol.

Wish I could help you on the Goodreads thing, but I don't know.

As far as what's popular... I've always felt there is a market for every genre... as long as the writing is superb it will be heard....

    All the best for 2014!

  18. Yikes! Malfunctioning furnaces are scary. Glad you guys are okay. :)

  19. Hi Sara,

Yes, finally, I have arrived :) Oh my, when I can't surf the internet, I get waves of panic. At least you could snuggle up in a nice warm blanket without the furnace working. Although I suppose hot water might of also been a problem.

Sorry, I'm totally useless in regards to Goodreads. As for genre, I'm an experimental character created by a dog.

    Here's to a delightful 2014.

    Gary :)

  20. I'm not very good with GoodReads, but it looks like you've probably figured it out! We've had similar issues here. Our internet went out and, since I work from home, I was doomed for a few hours or so. But people posting about their heat being out made me appreciate that we at least had that. We're on a heat pump, though, so if it gets really cold, our house is still fairly breezy inside.

  21. I don't think you can do that with Goodreads. It's not like Pinterest.

Ouch on the Internet AND the furnace. That would be brutal. Usually it's just one or the other that goes for me.

  22. Hey lady love...miss you! Goodreads can be private if you press the shhhhh button. yeah, I know...totally doesn't exist :(

  23. Glad to hear the furnace and internet are back on!
Hmm, good question about GoodReads. I'm still wondering how to export my LibraryThing catalogues to GoodReads. I don't feel properly represented without all my books listed!

  24. Haha! I love that you missed the internet more than the furnace. I think I would, too. You can always add another blanket, as for the internet...

Thanks for the links. I'm off to check them out.

  25. Glad to hear your back on track with the furnace and internet. I'd go insane without an internet connection, lol. As for your gr question, I'm not very active on gr and have no idea if or how to go about making a bookshelf private. Wish I could be of more help. And thanks for the links!

  26. Welcome back!
I'm not very good with Goodreads. But I'd definitely go crazy without the internet ;)
