Forward Motion

It's the beginning of October.  Not only is it the beginning of a new month it's the beginning of the end.  The end of the year, anyway.  We have only three months left in 2012, which means it's also the beginning of the holiday season.

Stop freaking out, I'm not the kind of person who gets out Christmas decorations in October.  But really, if you have to make Halloween costumes for kids, and if you're like me, you need to start now because last minute Will. Not. Work.  Also, I have to start planning for Christmas and finalizing gifts because for one, I want to spread out the financial obligation, and two, we like to make gifts for people and need to avoid the last minute thing we spoke of earlier.  Not to mention that any going to family generally need to be mailed before Thanksgiving.  Then there's the fact that agents usually stop taking queries in December as they try to clean their desks for the holidays.  Put that together and it's time to get working.

If I wait until I hve time to write I'll never write. I have to make time for it. I have to sacrifice other things for it.  A finished novel isn't going to fall in my lap, neither is a clear and easy two hours a day to write it in.  But making the time for something I love and am passionate about is worth it.

October is going to be my month of progress I'm going to work hard, and get lots done before the crush of November and December.  What are you doing in October?

  1. October around here is full of football. My husband is a high school coach. It's also the start up for my daughter's traveling basketball season. Whew. Lots of sports. In the middle of all that I have to teach and make sure I have time for final edits to a middle grade MS I want to query soon.

  2. My October will be almost as bad as September. The house is still in turmoil, three closets' contents are piled on the study floor so trim can be painted. Most of the furniture is still sutffed back in less than half of the house, and we plan to do the dining room floor next. Arrrrgh! But I can get to the computer now...if I find time between helping trim off doors, etc., etc., etc.

    1. If your painting trim then you're almost done right? And the dining room should be easier then the study I would think. You'll be glad of the remodel when you're done. I'm sure it all looks lovely.

    2. Ha! That's what you think! The trim in only in the closets of the hall. We have all the trim in the bedrooms, the doors in the hall (all 7 of them), the floors in the dining room, solarium, back bath, and kitchen, a complete to the walls redo of the kitchen and bathroom vanity, etc., etc., etc.

My hubby is hungry to do it all since the last whole house reno was in 1980-81 when we moved in.

    3. Sounds like it's about time. I remember when my parents re-did their kitchen. They had four months of cooking only in the microwave that had been moved into the study. Hard to endure but it makes for a beautiful home and good memories (when the sore muscles start working again). I hope you post pics when it's done.

  7. I'm drafting! I'm going to squeeze it in because I'm loving it, and I need to, and it's hard to find time to write, but you do if it's a priority. No TV for me! :)

    Have a great month, Sara.

  8. Awesome October goals Sara! This up an coming month scares me to bits. There is SO much going on for me that I'm not sure at what end to start with. But one thing is sure. Write. There must always be time for that. (: Have a productive month and enjoy the holiday preparations!

  11. October is our birthday season. We have four in our family (of six), before there's Halloween to think about. We've also got another trip to Disneyland Paris for the kiddies, and I'm starting a new job the week after that, but writing and editing will. Still. Happen. Being completely honest, it's the only way I can cope with it all! ;)

  14. Yes, I can completely relate to you Sara. I gotta make time to write and if I don't make time, I'll never write. The blogosphere distracts me too much so it takes me FOREVER to find a time to write. :(

  16. You're an inspiration, Sara. Wish I had half your energy. October is a difficult time for me. I generally spend more time writing and reading. I also make time for meditation. I need to find my spirit and quieten down all those sad memories. I also love to read about the lives of mothers like yourself. Thanks for the smiles.

  20. therapy, writing, therapy, wish I was shopping, therapy, doctor appts and did I mention therapy?Although yearly we make Christmas ornaments and assorted gifts this I'm not able :( My credit card is going to max out with online shopping, others will have to do our regular get together for Thanksgiving and Christmas. My body and house just are not up to it.

    1. Hopefully all that therapy will lead to less pain, more flexibility and more writing. Hope you're doing ok.

  21. You sound so much more organized than I am right now! I'm not even entirely sure what the Halloween costumes will be this year and I have a vague idea for our homemade Christmas gifts. Good for you for making time for writing. It can be so easy to let thing after thing fall in the way of writing. There's always something else to be done.

    1. Don't give me too much credit. This post was more of a desire to be organized than a declaration of being so. :P

  22. I will be finishing up my YA Horror (need to get in gear on that one!) for October. And I admit I'm very curious about your homemade gifts, though I'm not sure if you can post them on your blog or not... ;)
