Desert Island

I'm not ready to tackle the new challenge.  I'm afraid I need to put on my thinking cap and today is kinda crazy so look for that later in the week.  Instead I wanted to answer a question Deniz asked on friday.

"Which authors would you desperately need on a deserted island?"

Well, I chose to answer this in two ways.  The first, which authors would I want there with me.  Yes I know this means it wouldn't exactly be a deserted island but I thought it would be fun.  Two, the published works of which authors would you like to have with you on a deserted island.  So...

1.  Charlotte Bronte, Jolene Perry, Diana Gabaldon (I'd be too scared to actually talk to her though), Anton Chekhov, Leo Tolstoy,  Terry Pratchett, Laura Ingles Wilder, Anne Tyler.

2. Deanna Raybourne, Diana Gabaldon, Jolene Perry, J.K. Rowling, (can't wait until her new book comes out so I can see if it holds up), Thosmas Costain, Anne Tyler, Terry Pratchett, Charlotte Bronte (mostly Jane Eyre though her other books are good) Jane Austin (of course).

That's what I came up with off the top of my head.  I'm sure I'd change it a little if I let it roll around a bit.  There's a lot of crossover and if I didn't put someone on both lists it's not because I thought they, or their books, were horrible, it's just, well, it is a deserted island and I had no idea how big it was and didn't want to sink it under the weight of authors or books.  I mean Terry Pratchett alone has over 30 books.  Hmmm, I wonder if this island has wifi and I can get them all kindle.

Who would you want?

  1. Oh, Diana Gabaldon, first and foremost! Plus Catherine Asaro and Lois McMaster Bujold. I'm working on discovering more writers every day.

BTW, which titles of Anne Tyler are you favs. I've only read THE ACCIDENTAL TOURIST and it didn't wow me.

    1. Oooo, I'll have to read those. I've read all of Anne Tyler. Some I don't like as much, I think my favorites are Searching for Caleb and Celestial Navigation. I'm a character reader and I think she does a great job with that.

    2. Catherine Asaro's SKOLIAN EMPIRE series is great SF romance/space opera. I haven't read her fantasies. Lois McMaster Bujold write space opera and fantasy also. I like the MILES VOKOSIGAN series and the CHALLION series. Let me know when you're ready to read and I'll get you started on the first one in the series.

  2. Haha! I love this!

I think I would go for someone who writes good survival books. Or books on how to find civilization again. ;)

    1. Sure, if you're going to be smart about it. :) I don't know, all alone on an island with a lot of my favorite books? I may not want to leave.

  4. I do like a mix of classic and modern. I'd have to go with Charles Dickens and JK Rowling. I think Shakespeare probably had a great personality, too.

    1. Good choices. I thought about Shakespeare but I was afraid. What if he isn't anything like what I imagine?

  6. Love your lists! I'd definitely need my whole library, which I think might fit on two Kindles. Someone mentioned something about solar power... [bg]

  7. I would take Jolene too! But I don't think she would be too happy with me about that :D

    1. Well, I wouldn't really want to take people away from their families. And the ones that are dead probably wouldn't actually contribute much but it was fun to think about. Maybe we'll make it a luncheon then we can all go home.

    2. p.s. I almost didn't put her because I didn't want to creep her out but she seems like so much fun.
