Goodreads

I'm thinking of getting a goodreads account.  Does anyone use goodreads?  What can you tell me about it?  What do you like, not like?  As far as I understand you get lots of book recommendations, and have book discussions.  You can create list of books you want to read right?  And leave book reviews?    Is there a limit to your book list?  Could I use it to catalog all the books I own? Is it more for readers or does it help a professional writer with their social presence?

Thanks in advance for anything anyone can tell me about goodreads. I know I'm way behind the times (I got my first cell phone less than a year ago) but I hate jumping in to things and want to find out as much as I can before starting.

  1. I'm on goodreads. It's good interaction with readers and writers alike.

  2. I've heard wonderful things about it, but I've not found the time to start it up. Good luck!

    1. Me too, I'm hoping once I get it set up it won't take a lot of maintenance. I just wanted somewhere I could list books.

  3. It's good for all those things and more. And yes, it kind of sort of does come in handy before you become published as a way to get yourself known. I especially like it for cataloguing my books. That way I know what I've read and if I liked it or not.

  4. I have an account but haven't really done anything on it. Not that I don't want to. It's just one of those things that I'll do if I ever have to the time. Which is probably never. But it does sound like a great way to keep track ofs everything books. I have heard the reviews are not always accurate, but I guess that comes with any reviewing forum.

    1. Yea, any review is going to be that person's preference. The time thing is what has me worried too.

  5. I have an account, but I don't use it to its full potential. I know a lot of authors who do, and they're happy with the results. Can't beat that.

Thanks so much for visiting my blog yesterday and joining. That was a very kind and generous thing to do.

    1. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't use it to it's full potential either but I wanted to see what it's about and if there are aspects of it I could use that would be worth the time. Other than talking about books, cause I could do that all day and count it worth wile.

    1. I'm hearing that a bit, which is why I'm trying to make up my mind whether or not I would use it.

  7. I do not have a goodreads account and am reading this with interest because I haven't known what I would do with it, if I want one, or if it's a good use of time.

    1. The blogosphere is great for getting a lot of opinions to help figure these things out. And I have to say I'm glad I'm not the only one who isn't to sure how to use it.

that's ME!! Come find and friend me!!

I actually liked goodreads better when I wasn't an "author" on goodreads because it was all about basically having "book club" any time I felt the desire to sit down.

It REALLY helps me keep track of the books I"m dying to read. I have different lists like - MUST BUY, so when I'm B and N or my used bookstore, I pull up that list on my iPad and start searching out those books.

WAY fun. You must join :-D

  9. I had heard of goodreads but I had no idea what it was about. Now that I know I'm very interested! What a great post- thanks for bringing it up. I'm so glad someone else is behind the times tech-wise too, I was feeling so alone. :)

    1. When I figure out what I'm doing I'll have a post about what I've learned and how I use goodreads.

  10. I've got an account. I did it originally because someone I knew had one and invited me to be their friend there. What I really use it for is to keep track of the books I want to read at some point in the future. There are so many of them out there that I was losing track. I don't utilize it like some people do with forums and such.

    1. That's probably how I'll be using it too. Honestly I could take any social forum and turn it unsocial. It's a talent.

  11. I have a Goodreads account. I've tried Shelfari and Library Thing, both of which are much more limiting than Goodreads.

I like it for tracking what I've read and for posting reviews. I also like it for finding new books and tracking those too.

There are also contests for free books, and authors can set up meetings. There are discussions and fan forums, but I haven't explored those. I don't use it for social networking, though it can be that, too.

  12. I'm on there, and joined - of course - the Tolkien and DG groups, but... between the Forum and the Yahoo groups, I feel everything's been discussed already. And right off the bat I was annoyed with Goodreads because they have such a hard time syncing to my LibraryThing accounts; I spent hours and hours creating those LibraryThing catalogues and I don't want to have to do all that work again.
That's my main reason for not devoting much time to Goodreads - I feel it doesn't accurately represent my library/interests/tastes, so I don't hang out there.

Which reminds me, let me go see if I can sync LibraryThing. I test this every few months, and it never works. Sigh.

    1. Sorry they don't sync. I am hoping to be able to catalogue all the books I own. It would be nice to have so when I'm at a sale I don't have to wonder and either miss out on a book or end up with two of the same books.

  13. I lovet GoodRead lots and lots. I think it has played a major role in me reading more. I get excited to track my reading and to write reviews. Go get one, girl! We should be friends. Search Writing Jewels or Julia King.

    1. I set one up and am still trying to get it organized. I've rated some books but haven't really reviewed them to say why I rated them what I did. Thanks, I'll look you up!
