W is for Whimsy

As a child I believed in magic. I loved stories of different worlds where anything was possible and if it didn't happen in my world I was sure there was somewhere out there where it could.  Pixar is known for adding a short with each of their feature films.  for the movie Brave the short was La Luna.  A beautiful story magic and delight.  We watched this with my ever practical Grandmother once.  Bless her heart she couldn't figure out what the purpose of the short was.  How did THAT happen? and What is it ABOUT?  she kept asking. I tried to explain it was just a bit of whimsy, just to be enjoyed for what it was.  She was just confused.  I'm so glad that when I open a book I can believe in magic, delight in the words and believe the impossible.

  1. We are blessed to have grown up during a time when we could have the freedom to daydream and believe in magic. As a kid I also thought anything was possible. As an adult, I still do.

  2. Thankfully you *still* have an active imagination :)

I mean, seriously how boring would the world be if we couldn't think about what was behind the half-open door, the one with the flickering light and the soft Wurlitzer music wafting out...

  3. Children understand whimsy as magic but don't understand what whimsy is. That's one of the greatest beliefs as a child...a world where anything can happen. As we get older we lose that.

  4. How cute. I guess there's a real generation gap between entertainment today and what once was, yet when animation first came out, they were also shorts. :)

  6. Whimsy is such a great word! Just saying it out loud stops me from taking myself too seriously. :-)

  7. It's great to be completely transported into a world where anything can happen. Imagine if we were just stuck with the here and now - it's not ALWAYS that interesting!

  9. It sounds like watching something with my Dad. He's always asking "why" and "how". Once we were watching an old episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation and the Klingons were speaking in Klingon (with no subtitles and mainly, I guess, for flavor) and he leans over and says...

    "What are they saying?"

    Like I speak Klingon....lol.

  11. I loved La Luna. In fact... I think I loved it a lot more than Brave. :-D

Whimsy is a wonderful thing to have. I always find it frustrating when people are practical to a fault.

    1. I think I liked it more than Brave also.

Practicality is very useful. We need practical people. But I think that unless you have some whimsy in you your practicality will control you, not the other way around.
