D is for Don't

Don't touch it!  It might just get you.  Don't open that new book now.  Dinner will burn, your children will whine and fuss at being neglected.  Not even a taste of the new worlds, new friends.  Your real life will slip away, ephemeral as mist and you will forget what is real and what is not.

But your fingers twitch, your soul reaches out, you have to know what is in it.  Soon you're ten pages in, fifty, a hundred.  You don't sleep, you don't eat, and before you know it, you finish.  The words stop, leaving you disoriented and still wanting more.

  2. Ah yes, many an evening I've spent under the spell of the written word. Bah, who needs sleep anyway!

    1. Um, I do. But I also need books. It's a delicate balance.

  3. You summed it up very well! Many a time I've felt bereft on finishing a book.

  4. I love a book that can do that to me and you've really captured the feel of that.

    Great entry :)

  5. Great description. I love when I'm so into my writing I feel that disoriented feeling as I have to come back to my real surroundings. It doesn't happen often, but when it does, it feels inspired!

  6. I know that feeling. I have a love/hate relationship with it. I love it when I am so engrossed in a story that I refuse to put it down, but I hate myself in the morning. I also hate it when a book so compelling ends, because I want to be back in the magical world that the author created.

  7. Every single Harry Potter book did this to me. I also will put the book down to savor it and delay reaching the end, as if this will make the story even longer. But then I pick it up and dive right back in minutes later.

  8. Good books are one of the the most delicious kinds of temptations. Someday I'd like to write a book that would seduce my readers into neglecting their work and household chores!

  9. Oh, gosh! That's it. That's what it's like. I finish an ebook and have to set up the next one on the first page before I can quit. Does that sound obsessive? You bet! LOL!

  10. I've been bit a few times. Great feeling loving a book so much you can't think of doing anything else.

  11. This is completely accurate.

If I ever get to read anything fun it's at night. No matter how tired I am I always end up staying awake for an hour longer than I intended.

  12. I totally wanted to break into song by your "Don't touch it" line, however MC Hammer phrased it "Don't touch this." haha

I have been so sucked into some books that I have stayed up all night to finish it. What can I say, I'm a sucker for a good book.

  13. Um, yep, this post describes me perfectly. I hate reading books a chapter at a time. I'd rather immerse myself in it completely. Because of that I am very careful about getting to close to a good looking book! I have to wait until I can afford to "disappear" for awhile.

  14. I love that feeling of being totally wrapped up in a book. I'm off to another world and meeting new people. Yeah!

  15. Love this post! This is exactly how I am when I get reading, as long as it's interesting I just have to know what happens. Mind you I wait until the kids are in bed so there's no worries of burning dinner. But it's wonderful when you start a book you just can't put down.

Have fun with the a-z challenge.

    1. It's nice to have an author you feel that way about.

  17. It's like telling your kids not to touch something and the way it registers in their brain is just the opposite. (:

  18. Loving all your posts so far!
This one reminds me of myself cooking dinner one-handed while reading DG's latest book...

  19. "I'll only read a page or two, just while that is simmering." And that is how dinner was burned.
