Seasons

It's strawberry season.  I love strawberries.  There's one month during the year when they're abundant and large, fresh and cheap.
Strawberries come up several times in my WIP.  They pick them in the spring then preserve them to eat year round.  They're one of my MC's favorite food.  But I have had to be careful in what form I put them in the book during which seasons.

Have you ever read a book that has people picking cherries in April?  Or maybe people are eating fruits that don't grow in that climate in a time period that doesn't have mass transportation?  I have.  It detracts from the legitimacy of the writing.  So watch your seasons, climates and hemispheres.  If you are making up a world what are the growing climates there?  Or is it a world where everything is instantly available?  Making sure you have such details correct will add authenticity to the writing and create a place readers will want to return to.

But how can I concentrate on writing with one of these in the kitchen?
Mmmmm, strawberry pie.

  1. How funny, I just posted about seasons! Sort of. It snowed six inches here so we aren't close to strawberry season yet. I'm looking forward to it. That pie looks yummy!

  2. You cannot concentrate, admit it. Eat a huge slice and be done with it. You'll be able to concentrate much better afterwards!

  3. Ruth, My parents got hit by that storm too. I love winter and miss snow but do agree that by this time of year it's time to move on.

It's a great pie, I'll post the recipe if anyone is interested. It's the only one I could find that didn't use Jello in it. If I wanted Jello I'd make it. It does NOT belong in strawberry pie!

  4. Jello in a strawberry pie? What philistine did that?

  5. Dozens of recipes on the web. Guess it just goes to show you can't trust everything on the internet. Who'd have thought?

  6. I agree! I've spent so much time making sure that if Rosa's eating figs or quinces, they were actually around in August. I kept switching from peaches to figs, trying to get it right...
Hope I can use strawberries too!

  7. I imagine it could be difficult to discover what kind of fruits and vegetables they had in Rosa's time. Of course you excel at research so it's probably a breeze for you.
