No this post doesn't actually have anything to do with the title. I was just thinking of Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Anyone seen the movie?
We've got some great family time planned this week so I'll see you all next monday!
Until then I'll be pondering this. Why are pants plural? Think about it: trousers, knickers, breeches, leggings. All plural. There are two legs, but they're all in one piece of clothing, yet we still say "a PAIR of PANTS" I get why glasses are plural. They have two separate lenses. And we don't call them a pair. Is there some obscure, half forgotten, grammatical excuse anyone knows about?
Hope you all have a great week!
LOL! Why are pants plural? Crazy English language.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your vacay!
I agree. English is crazy.
DeleteWhere I'm from, pants are double plural. They're called "pantses."
ReplyDeleteReally? That's kinda crazy if you don't mind my saying.
DeleteYou think that's crazy? Kids still call "tests" "testes". Say it out loud and see what it sounds like. :)
DeleteEnjoy your time!
ReplyDeleteLinda, hilarious. Love regional differences.
Regional differences are pretty interesting.
DeleteOh man! Now my mind is going 100 an hour! LOL This is great. Hope you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteUh oh. Sorry to make your brain spin. :)
DeleteHave a good time! Funny point about the pants. My husband, whose second language is English, notices quirky language things like that all the time :)
ReplyDeleteI bet he has some interesting comments to make. English is such a mishmash.
DeleteHave a lovely time. Hope you're going somewhere cooler than here!!!
ReplyDeleteGoing to NC for the grandfather mountain Scottish games!
DeleteOh, now I'm jealous!
DeleteTwo legs vs one legged pants. Which would be a skirt, eh?
ReplyDeleteI never thought of it like that!
DeleteHope you have a great week! Actually, *don't* we say a pair of glasses? Pants are plural in Turkish too... And then there's that German band - Die Toten Hosen - the dead pants...
ReplyDeleteDead pants, I love it. I guess you do call glasses a pair. I don't have glasses and didn't think about it until my hubby, who does, corrected me. Shrug.
DeleteHave more fun than you can stand! :)
ReplyDeleteI hope to!
DeleteOh dear... you're going to have me thinking about this until next Monday ;)
ReplyDeleteI hope your week is lovely! :D
I actually hated the Hitchhiker's Guide movie. It should have worked: good cast (Alan Rickman was hilarious!), funny script, etc, but it just didn't translate well at all. The book is just too quirky and original, I think.
ReplyDeleteAllan Rickman was the best part of that movie. I do agree about the book being too quirky to really translate well. Over all they did better than I expected but then again I'm not a die hard Douglass fan.
DeleteHave a great time with the family this week!!
ReplyDeleteI didn't like the Hitchiker's movie, but I liked the book.
Well, books are always better.
DeleteHope you're having a grand time, Sara! (BTW - you won some awards on my blog yesterday ^_^.)
ReplyDeleteThanks! I'll hop on over.
DeleteHa! They're not plural in french, lol.
ReplyDeleteHope you're having a blast!
Hmmm, now I feel the need to find out how to say pants in a variety of languages just to see.
