This

Sometimes other people say it better than you can.

This. This is perfect.

It's a comfort to know that successful, wonderful authors can struggle in the same way I am. That I'm not hopeless or unfit to be an author. Even better to know that there is hope for this horrible first draft I'm fighting with.

  1. Yes, it was a lovely description and acknowledgement of what we all have to go through, wasn't it!

  4. That was perfect. I gave myself permission to write badly years ago. I mean that is that the delete button is for.

    1. It's something I'm still working on. Some days are better than others.

  5. Any hope we can get while in the middle of the grand struggle is awesome.

  6. That other blogger did say it very well. The only way we can edit and improve a manuscript is if we first write that pesky first draft, no matter how many self-doubts crop up along the way and try to tell us to give up on it.

  7. LOL! I feel the exact same way about first drafts, but I know in my heart of hearts I just have to get through it so I can get to the pretty part where I love the story and can't wait to share it with people. And then all that awfulness is worth it.

    1. Normally I love drafting. This book is an argument though, not a discovery.

    2. =( Oy! Sometimes it goes like that. Hey, I know you're on break for the next couple weeks, but I just wanted to wish you well. I hope everything is epic while you're away.

  8. You've got a first draft?! That's awesome! I'm still fighting with my outline, lol!! Don't give up. Little by little you'll get your first draft into second draft and third, and one day soon, it'll be all shiny and ready for the world to read. :)

    1. Well, I've got a beginning, middle and end but I'm missing huge chunks and a lot of world building. Still, it could be considered a first draft.

  9. Keep breathing, Sara... maybe put it aside for a few weeks, concentrate on your fantastic new home and then get back to it when the feeling it right.

  10. "the only thing you can't improve on is a blank page." Wise words those. You've got your arc, now you colour in that rainbow.

  11. Sometimes I liken book writing to learning a complicated piano piece. I won't get the song all right the first time or the second time, but I believe I will get there if I keep playing.

  12. Argh! That you suck voice is all over my head when it comes to editing. Blissfully disappears when I'm drafting a new story. Why can't that bliss stick around for the tough parts?
