I just saw that Business Insider listed 'poets, lyricists and creative writers' as the second most competitive job in the country.
Go us!
Agents are listed at number ten.
The thing I find so amazing is that even though it is competitive, whether we're selling to agents, publishers, or readers, we are still friends. The writing community as a whole is supportive, friendly and always willing to offer advice. So even if we do have a competitive job, we also have the best co-workers.
If you look at it like everything else, this is the most competitive profession, yet the writing community is the most supporting and warm. We all get together to celebrate someone's achievement and be sad for someone who got yet another R.
ReplyDeleteI much prefer the friendly approach!
ReplyDeleteSo true. We're awesome, right? *high five* And how was I NOT following you with GFC already? That's like insane!
ReplyDeleteI saw that a while ago! Made me feel like a warrior-woman. :)
ReplyDeleteHoly cow - that high. I need more caffeine.
ReplyDeleteYep writers are an independent, but friendly breed.
ReplyDeleteHear, hear! It's the best job in the world. :)
ReplyDeleteBravo for the best co-workers ever!
ReplyDeleteMy dear human friend,
ReplyDeleteI most certainly agree with that. My fictional human and I have noted the friendship within the writing community. A most pawsitive situation. You do realise I'm an acclaimed pawblisher! Arf! Arf!
Pawsitive wishes,
Penny the Jack Russell dog and modest internet superstar! :)
Oh GET OUT. Man… that's… hopeful, LOL…
ReplyDeleteBut I'm not surprised! Crazy thing is we all still do it… because we have to!
I like J.L. Murphey's comment. :)
ReplyDeleteSo true! Writers are some of the nicest people in the world!
ReplyDeleteI saw that too. It is fiercely competitive, and I'll admit to a little professional jealousy sometimes, since it's taking me forever to get my novels out there. But, yeah, it is also the most supportive community too. I'm always thrilled to see someone get a publishing deal or find an agent. In fact, an agent once said at a conference that no one else's success is depriving you of a chance for that same success. There isn't a finite amount of success to go around. That was a nice way to think about it.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more! Competitive and supportive. That's a win win relationship.
ReplyDeleteYay! Great news!

Yikes. I didn't realize it was that high up on the list but I agree that writer's are wonderful at supporting each other.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting. Nothing wrong with some healthy competition :)
ReplyDeleteThe second most competitive job??? YIKES! That's a bit alarming. What's the first?
ReplyDeleteYeah it's awesome that we have such a great community spirit, especially because the industry is so cut-throat.
ReplyDeleteWell said.
ReplyDeleteIt's amusing that they list it as a "job" -- I guess one of the reasons so many people want to do it is that it has the potential not to feel like "work," although of course one downside is that it doesn't offer the typical job's pay either.
ReplyDeleteIt is one of the most supportive and helpful communities!
ReplyDeleteLike what you said!
ReplyDeleteI agree - I love how supportive writers are with each other.
