I too suffered from mild depression and didn't realize it at the time. I wrote a lot of poetry but that was about it. I just didn't realize it at the time (the cutting should have been my first clue, but it wasn't). I don't regret that period (mostly). It has benefited my writing. But I'm not sure I would have been able to write if I had been depressed. At least not for publication. Rejections are depressing enough as it is without adding that stress when you're depressed. :PStinahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11415189347501942340noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-83528601653366510.post-87286006392991848682012-10-19T15:51:23.515-04:002012-10-19T15:51:23.515-04:00Thanks for the links! I think writers often go through extremes of emotion - especially when we are so involved that we live vicariously through the ups and downs of our characters. But having had a brush with depression aged 20, I know I couldn't do any writing then. To elaborate on that comment, let me add that I don't believe being moody and depressed are the same thing, although people use those two words interchangeably. I don't think you have to be "depressed" to write. I do think having strong access to your emotions and what's behind them, which can come from being sensitive, can possibly help.
